Professional Development

I attended the DACTM annual conference for my own individual development.  This was an all-day conference with break-out sessions to attend based on the individuals interest.  I attended sessions that would help me improve and reflect on my high school math instruction.

With the state of Michigan changing from the ACT to the SAT for the junior year college entrance exam our school brought in a representative from Cambridge Educational Services to explain the SAT test to the teachers and to give advice on how to best prepare our students for this new test.

One of the districts initiatives this year was to unpack the common core standards and make student friendly learning targets and essential questions.  These two things are important for the students to understand the goals of the day and what they should know at the end of the lesson.  We also looked at different ways to assess the students formatively and quickly for easy feedback for the students and teacher.  We had two professional development days focused on these topics.

This conference was also for my own individual development.  The MCTM host an annual conference that is three days long.  At the conference they host a lot of different break-out sessions that you can attend based on your interests.  I attended the sessions that were focused around the high school classroom and mostly for Algebra classes since that is what I was currently teaching.

This is a committee that was formed to improve the school and student achievement.  It is made up of the school's administrators, department chairs, and a few select teachers.  We meet twice a month for one hour to discuss things that are happening in the school and to brainstorm things we could potentially implement, change, or improve.

This is a required committee that all teachers in the district must be a part of.  Every week each department meets for an hour to discuss things that are going on in their department.  We also look at student achievment and growth over time and on standardized tests.  We discuss and collaborate with one another to make our students as successful as possible.

This is a committee that was formed to bring together all of the secondary math teachers.  Any secondary math teacher is invited to attend the meetings that occur once a month.  At these meetings we dicuss the successes and challenges that we notice in the students' achievement and the alignment of the curriculum.  These meetings are to make sure we are vertically aligning the curriculum from year to year to help the students be successful.

This was an all-day clinic for high school cheerleading coaches to attend.  At this clinic they discussed spotting techniques to keep all the athletes safe.  They also discussed and demonstrated new stunts to bring back to our teams to try.  This clinic was also a good way to network with other coaches and share successes and challenges.

This clinic was a two-day event for cheerleading coaches to attend.  At this clinic we learned about new rules and changes to previous rules.  We also were able to attend break-out sessions to get more information on certain topics we were interested in.  They also showed new stunts to try with our own athletes.  Again, this was a great way to network with our cheerleading coaches.

Common Core Math Conference

In August 2012 I attended a three day conference and in April 2014 I attended a two day conference where we were intoduced to the new common core standards and the Smarter Balanced Assessment.  We learned what the eight mathematical practices are and how to change our curriculum to implement the new standards and practices into our teaching methods to help our students be succesful on the new common core standardized tests.

Our school distict hosts a technology week long camp before school starts where teachers and staff of the district present different technologies they use in their classroom.  I chose to attend a session on how to make a Wiki website to use in my classroom in 2012 and a session on Schoology in 2013.  I really learned a lot from these sessions and made a wiki website that I used in my classroom for two years until I decided to create a new website using Weebly.

Technology Conference

Our district purchased the book "Teach Like a Champion" by Doug Lemov, which gives 49 techniques that put students on the path to college, for all teachers to read.  On one of our professional development days teachers from the district gave a presentation on each of these different techniques being used in their own classroom so that everyone could see how to effectively implement them into their classrooms.

Teach Like a Champion

Our district bought the NWEA MAP Assessment to track our students growth over time.  All of our students are required to take these tests twice a year from grades K-11.  At the high school level they are required to take the math, reading, writing, and science tests.  I have taken extra professional development opportunities to learn how to test the students as well as how to effectively use the data in the classroom.
